Innovation for Change

Summary

Innovation for Change (I4C) is a global network of people and organisations who want to connect, partner and learn together to defend and strengthen civic space and overcome restrictions to citizens’ basic freedoms of assembly, association and speech. It is a community-led network inspired by ideas, methods, and technologies from across different sectors. Members work together on advocacy, research, network building, education and training, fundraising, digital literacy and technology development initiatives. I4C has seven connected regional hubs which are growing in both physical and online spaces across Africa, Central Asia, East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, the Pacific and South Asia. Innovation for Change is supported by CIVICUS and Counterpart International.

Involvement/Role of WACSI

WACSI is the West Africa regional connector for the Innovation for Change (I4C)- Hub Afrique. WACSI supports the regional hub (Hub Afrique) to implement programmes by providing technical input, contributing to amplifying the visibility of the hub across the region and provide logistical and coordination support to facilitate the effective organisation of events and activities. WACSI also supports with data collection for commissioned research and also supports monitoring and evaluation efforts.

Key Achievements

In 2018, WACSI coordinated and implemented a continental shared learning convening on alternative funding models for civil society. It brought together 25 human rights and social justice activists from NGOs, CBOs, women’s groups, youth groups and social enterprises from 25 African countries. A key outcome of the convening is the creation of a guidebook on perspectives and best practices regarding alternative funding models.

WACSI also contributed to managing and implementing the Social Innovation Challenge, provided data to support the Policy Influencing Capacity Assessment and disseminated research surveys and information about developments at the Hub.
